How to Avoid Being Lazy in Your Business

Entrepreneurs have it easy…you get up when you want and set your own hours. This is one of the best perks of running your own business. However, you have to be careful not take your entrepreneurial freedom for granted and become a lazy business owner.

It’s really easy to become a “business owner bum.” If you’re not careful, you could find yourself lying around all day, telling yourself that you’re thinking of a master plan…or you’re stalling on the same project for weeks with analysis paralysis doing the same things over and over again…or maybe you allow distractions to divert your attention every time you settle down to work. These kinds of self-defeating work habits will cause your business to become stagnant. However, there are just a few steps you can take to get up and into action on a daily basis. Check them out:

1.  Set aside time to plan your week in advance. It only takes about 15-30minutes to write a list and add a few action steps. I use Sunday evenings to create a master to-do list for the upcoming week that covers everything from what I need to write, who I need to contact to what tasks need to be delegated to team members. Using my Productivity and Profit Planner, I prioritize my list so I can work through it in order of importance, and I’m not wasting time on less important tasks. While I’m working, I listen to inspirational music or an inspirational talk to help me think in the direction of my current projects and my big dreams. This master to-do list keeps me focused on what’s most important, now. When I complete a task, I’m not wondering what to do next. Because I’ve written it down, studied it and put everything in order, I know just where to go, what to do, and when to do it.

Also, having a plan helps you to track your progress. When you’re writing down what you’re doing, you’ll be able to see where you’re being lazy and need to pick up. You can also identify your peak times of the day, as well as when you’re running low on energy and focus. Try tracking your daily experience in your Success Journal, you can use the master weekly to-do list in the journal to track how much you’ve accomplished and reflect on how each day went. This will give you insight into your own daily routine so that you can improve it.

2. Get Up & Get Dressed. Oftentimes people underestimate the power of your appearance. Nevertheless, when you look good, you feel good and you perform good. Start each day by getting dressed up like you are going to work. You’ll put yourself in a working frame of mind, which will motivate you to work instead of lounging around in your pajamas all day.

3. Take action…any action: what is the smallest and most immediate action you can take towards your goal? Do that! Once you start doing something it’s easy to do another task, then another and another. Avoid the “all or nothing” mentality. Great businesses are not built in a day. You don’t have to try to get everything done all at once. Instead work your way down the list, starting with your lowest hanging fruit.

4. Create a daily routine. Instead of allowing your day to dictate to you, create a structured plan to dictate how you want your day to go. Write out a specific baseline schedule for yourself. What time will you awake? What time will you start work and end work? Schedule in break times as well. Create a structure that works best for you and then decide to stick to it. You may have to adjust it until you find the perfect rhythm. Review your schedule the night before and again, decide to get up “on time” and start your day as planned.

5. Change your environment: If you can’t seem to bring yourself to be productive at home, change up your scenery. Take your office on the road to the local coffee shop, where you’ll be surrounded by others working. Just being in the environment of productive others will motivate you to be more productive.semi formal dresses

6. Set yourself up to work and win. Before I start work, I surround myself with everything that I will need and want. I do this to avoid having to get up multiple times to get them. So, add to your desk all the essentials, (including your snacks) so that you can jump into work without having to take as many breaks.

7. Get Organized. Did you know that you can organize your way out of a rut? Disorganization often contributes to feelings of overwhelm and encourages sluggish behavior. Start by clearing and cleaning your workspace, it will make you feel 10 times better about yourself and inspire you to be more productive.

8. Get a coach. A business coach will keep you accountable for the progress of your business. Having someone to answer to is motivating enough to keep you taking action and moving forward in your business. My clients have monthly accountability forms, where they can assess their progress and set goals for the next month. Reviewing your actions will help you to see your own rate of productivity and should inspire you to do more.
