The #1 Ladies Millionaire Maker

Good Housekeeping x L’Oreal Celebrating 50 over 50 pt. 2: The Perfect Age

In the timeliest fashion, I was invited to attend a special luncheon honor 50 women over 50, who are at the #perfectage in life right now. This event took place at the Hearst Tower in New York City, just days before my 50th birthday. The experience felt like the best welcoming party to this new phase in life.

Being in a room full of women who have lived life on their own terms, breaking barriers, defying the odds and making an impact was exhilarating. I had a chance to meet many of my fellow 50 over 50 comrades. Some of these fabulous women in their fifties included, New York Fashion Week Creator Fern Mallis, artist and style icon Debora Rapoport. We chatted about everything from meditation, taking exotic trips, being an author, fashion and what’s next in life.

The elegant affair was buzzing with excitement as we all got to know one another and celebrated our success.

The highlight of the event was hearing from the celebrity panel: Whoopi Goldberg, Cynthia Rowley and Kyra Sedgewick moderated by Soledad O’Brien. The panel discussion was so candid, funny and full of great advice.

Soledad asked the panel what did they think turning 50 would be like. Kyra said “all of the cliché things you hear of being calmer and wiser are kind of true.” She also said she felt more freedom at 50 to be her authentic self with no apologies. “You just say and do what you want at this age.”

Whoopi mentioned that she didn’t feel a significant change at 50. She was still working in her career and enjoying life. “I didn’t think about the significance of turning 50 until the night before,” said Goldberg. It is easy to relate when you’re in your prime, achieving your goals, living out your dreams.

The panel all agreed that the narrative of women over 50 has changed because we are living longer and enjoying life.

Whoopi shared lifelong wisdom for women of all ages, “Everything I got the opportunity to do, I tried to do it,” said Goldberg. “Don’t be afraid of the f-word (fail). Just try it, you won’t be good at everything, but hey, you can at least say that you tried it.”

Turning 50 is a time to liberate yourself from fear and go big in life. It’s certainly a time to really step up to achieve your lifelong dreams. All of the panelists agreed that the 50s is the perfect age to try new things. Kyra said her reinvention happened in her fifties, when she stepped behind the camera and became a director. “It’s really all that I want to do,” she said.

Cynthia Rowley mentioned that we should do something that scares you every day, something that keeps the fire burning inside. She began to say yes more often in her fifties, which led to her office supply collaboration with Staples, designer bandages and more.

The event was truly a lovely affair. I met many awesome women and gleamed great insights from successful women who are making big waves in the 50s.

Studies show that people in their 50s are in the ‘age of happiness’. Most are content with their lives than any other period. Jane Fransico, the editor of Good Housekeeping said, “Women over 50 have never left the stage.” She explained that “…L’Oreal and Good Housekeeping teamed up to celebrate the confidence, knowledge and sophistication that evolves during a woman’s life.”

As we left, Good Housekeeping and L’Oreal sent us off with fabulous bag of goodies.

At the time of this writing, it is my 50th birthday. And I feel so excited and hopeful about my future. About a year ago, I wrote my bucket list and set my intention to accomplish everything on it. I am now at this milestone birthday and half-way through my list.

I’ve found that the more I journalize and write my wants, every thing aligns to accomplish my desires. What you desire can be drawn to you like a magnet. As you enter into new life milestones, embrace the change and keep moving forward. As Soledad said to us, “You can be interesting in life at any age.”
